Hello. I'm Reeve. Reeve Fibberd, if we're being formal, which we aren't.

I write about the distance between what people seeking power say and what the record will bear. Promises, figures, definitions and explanations that seem to acquire a new meaning as soon as somebody asks a question.

Keeping the ledger

A political promise is a useful thing to keep. It has a speaker, a date and, with a bit of luck, enough detail to establish whether anything came of it.

This site puts the claim beside the evidence. Sometimes that means an article. Sometimes it means taking a published statement apart in the margin, showing where a fact checks out, where a definition changes and where the important decision has been left conveniently unspecified.

If a claim is right, I'll say so. There is no point keeping a ledger if you only enter the figures you like.

What I care about

Honest public argument. Equal citizenship. People being able to judge the promises made in their name. And what happens when somebody sells them an enemy instead of an answer.

I am interested in dishonesty, racism and the profitable business of telling the public that someone else is responsible for everything. The standard applies across parties. So does the obligation to get the facts right.

There will be jokes. Anyone asking to run the country should be able to survive a footnote and the occasional unflattering comparison with television.

How to check the work

Sources are linked where they are used. Allegations are attributed. Where the evidence is disputed or incomplete, the piece should say so. My conclusions are mine; the material underneath them is there for you to inspect.

If something is wrong, it should be corrected on the page, with a date and an explanation of the change.
